The traditional Tequila country stretches across five Mexican states including Jalisco, Guanajuato, Michoacan, Nayarit and Tamaulipas. This region is particularly known for its highly prized blue agave plant which takes 8 to 12 years to reach maturity and harvest. The process used to produce tequila requires great skill - it starts with harvesting the succulent hearts or piñas of the agave plants before they are cooked and fermented using natural elements such as water, air and yeast.
